Can't vote as I don't think anyone is proposing that it be one big country.I think the proposal is actually even less ambitious then the EU is.Its more about open trade with no national barriers but not a loss of individual govts, in the countries. And as I said in the other thread even the trade barrier relaxation has to be watched so that we don't just sacrifice our standards to someone else's lower ones.

If anything, we should be going in the opposite direction. Legalize secession. Smaller regional governments that actually represent the will of the people they govern.

Not sure I would favor a political union of all three. Obviously, the three are already very closely tied economically via NAFTA, etc. Before addressing the question of whether or not a political unification would be either good or bad, the question as to whether or not NAFTA has been good or bad should be answered. I have mixed feelings about NAFTA....mostly negative as far as the effect on American jobs goes although my gut instinct leads me to believe that in the end such open trade policies will benefit everyone and are largely inevitable anyway. Like it or not, I don't believe we can't assume an isolationist economic policy any more than we can assume an isolationist political or military policy. But a political union....I'd have to really think about that one.

Very interesting. Is secession illegal? I mean, if a state chose to secede from the union, is that against federal law? If so, can someone cite that exact statute?

There are no statutes nor language in the Constitution that makes it illegal. But in practice we fought a war over it and 600k dead proved that there isn't much chance of it happening again.

I agree, a BIG NO from me too. :hammer:

Any state that wants to should be able to secede from the union.

Without threat of a war.

I don't even see what we would gain out of that.
We should focus on free trade and free movement of people and ideas. North America does not need to be one country to achieve that.
And let's not underestimate the difference between the history, culture and political views of these 3 countries. For the 2 smaller and less powerful ones (Mexico and Canada), unification would mean loosing the possibility to have and express their own ideas on politics, economics, society, etc,... (however small, even very small, it could be right now).
And for the USA, I think they have enough problems like that, without having to deal with the Canadian and Mexican ones.

I actually would like a but more open and accepting attitude between the nations. you can travel all over Europe with one ticket, but if you try and cross borders around here you'll get guns pointed at you and have your shit searched.

on the other hand, it seems like Canada is the only one of the bunch whose leaders are not completely full of shit. I don't really need even more stupid bureaucracy messing things up.

that sounds like a bad idea to me. especially if you include mexico. they'll just be floods of mexicans into all the major cities. and theyll just turn to crime because they can't get a job

isn't that already what's happening?

(BTW, I'm sort of joking. but that is indeed what the media would have you believe.)

Hell no.

Our neighbours' problems should be our concern, and we should help them but not to the extent of draining ourselves. If there's ever to be a union it could create the spreading of political troubles not only on this continent but worldwide. I mean worse than now.
There goes identity, prosperity & the desire of bettering it all.

So fuck that. :2 cents:

For now, I guess I feel that way for not knowing anything on the subject so I'll be quiet & do some research first.

I don't live there, so I voted "I don't care". I won't tell you folks what to do.

Let me just add a little detail: After more than 50 years of European cooperation we're anywhere near from a unified government.

Many economic, agricultural, ecological, judicial responsibilities have been relegated to Brussels. But! ...

... the core of a sovereign state - i.e. matters of foreign policy and defense as well as an overwhelming share of fiscal governance remain with the individual countries. And I don't see that changing anytime soon.

No. I don't want a larger bureaucracy than the US government. and I damn sure don't want to inherit Mexico's problems.
