The C-5 Galaxy is the largest aircraft in the US Air Force's inventory, and a former world's largest aircraft for 13 years from 1969 to 1982. There are over 70 C-5s in service, a number that'll be reduced to 52 by 2017.
The C-5M (pictured) came about as a result of the 2006 Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program or RERP. In addition to new engines, the massive cargo plane also features upgrades to its skin and frame, landing gear, cockpit and pressurization systems. It reached IOC or Initial Operating Capability on 24 February 2014 with 16 aircraft delivered at the time.
